How cultural heritage contributes to the green, digital, and social transition

Cultural heritage plays a pivotal role in driving positive change across European cities, as highlighted in this article presenting diverse case studies selected by the European Heritage Hub project. From repurposing industrial sites for cultural activities to restoring medieval gardens using traditional techniques, these initiatives showcase how heritage contributes to green, digital, and social transitions. The selected projects not only address local challenges but also offer valuable case studies for policy solutions and inspire other regions to follow suit.

The European Heritage Hub received 40 high-quality applications from 33 cities and regions, through an Open Call for Local Good Practices, indicating a strong interest in leveraging cultural heritage for transformation. Through capacity-building activities like thematic webinars and peer-learning visits, Eurocities and partners aim to further disseminate the identified practices. These initiatives underscore the importance of local engagement and the potential of cities to lead the way in fostering sustainable and inclusive communities through heritage preservation and innovation.

From Glasgow to Ljubljana, European cities are embracing their cultural heritage to drive positive change. Projects like the redevelopment of historical buildings, such as the Stables and Sawmill in Pollok Country Park, and the transformation of industrial sites like the Rog bicycles factory in Slovenia, demonstrate the diverse ways in which heritage can be harnessed for social, environmental, and economic benefits. By involving citizens, universities, and various stakeholders in co-creating strategies for carbon-neutral actions and community development, these initiatives exemplify the power of heritage in shaping a more sustainable and resilient future for Europe.
